Porsche 917

The Porsche 917 in its various guises is quite possibly ‘the most iconic race car of all time’ and made famous by Steve McQueen in the film ‘Le Mans’

Dominating the race tracks in the early 1970’s and winning numerous titles around the world, the 917 outpaced all of its competitors by a large margin. It also gave Porsche wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1970 and 1971.

Capable of powering the car to an overall speed of 225mph with a 0-60 in 2.3 seconds, the flat 12 (4.5, 4.9, 5.0 litres) type 912 engine proved to be flawless throughout the whole of the endurance races. Other issues such as suspension faults and aerodynamics were evident.

Overall, the 917 in it’s 11 different guises (Long Tail, Medium Tail, Short Tail) proved to be a force to be reckoned with and an admirable rival to the Ferrari and Lola of the era.

The 917 has appeared in many liveries, such famous ones being the Pink Pig, Martini livery and Gulf colours along with many others.

John Wyer Automotive ran a successful team of 917 through the early part of the 1970’s in the distinctive Gulf colour scheme.

The 917 is still very capable of stretching its legs at Historic race events just to remind those who can remember it from the heydey, that it’s still a force to be reckoned with.
